Money raised through Dec. 31 will support projects protecting forests in Brazil and Costa Rica

DRAPER, UTAH – Premier leadership assessment and development firm Leadership Circle today launched its annual Steward the Planet campaign, raising funds to protect terrestrial rainforests in the Amazon region of Brazil and mangrove forests along the coast of Costa Rica.

“In all great traditions, there is a moral imperative that we are caretakers, guardians, stewards of this planet,” says Leadership Circle Co-Founder and Chief Knowledge Officer Bob Anderson. “As we have grown in population, the need for that has become more and more self-evident—and we are not doing it.

As leaders in the world and as leaders in the leadership space, it is incumbent upon us to take the lead, be examples, and do all we can. Future generations depend on what we do now.”

This year, in association with Conservation International, Leadership Circle is raising funds to support two projects. The first will help the Noke Koi tribe of the Brazilian Amazon to protect their land by helping them establish food security and a sustainable livelihood, improving existing infrastructure, promoting training, and helping develop local businesses. The second will help scale the restoration, conservation, and rehabilitation of mangrove forests around Costa Rica’s Gulf of Nicoya.

Working together with other organizations to reach the campaign goal of $185,000, Leadership Circle has committed to raise approximately 40% of total goal—$70,000.

“It’s time for us to wake up and manage our impact on the world,” says Anderson. “We do this each year because the time is urgent. This is one way our organization and its customers around the world can come together to have a direct impact in our stewardship of the planet.”

The 2023 campaign marks the fourth year that Leadership Circle has launched a fundraising campaign to benefit Conservation International projects. The 2022 campaign raised funds to support Project Peru, which focused on protecting and restoring the Alto Mayo tropical rainforest region, ensuring the long-term conservation of the Nuwas Forest, and designating a protected area off Peru’s coast. Earlier efforts supported grant-writing proposals to the United Nations Green Climate Fund for projects protecting and restoring the Amazon rainforest and mangrove forests in Ecuador.

Leadership Circle’s annual campaign to benefit Conservation International is just one part of the organization’s Steward the Planet Initiative. The initiative also includes an ongoing partnership with One Tree Planted, which results in the donation of one tree for every purchase of an electronic Leadership Circle Profile™ or virtual mat. Since July 2021, Leadership Circle has helped plant nearly 23,000 trees around the world.

Original research finds integrated leaders are 24% more effective

Draper, Utah – Leadership Circle, the leadership development company that assesses, coaches, and develops some of the world’s most impactful business leaders and teams, today announced their partnership with Unlocking Eve, an organization dedicated to bringing an integrated and inclusive approach to health care leadership to secure the health of the world’s citizens. The partnership is established under both organizations’ common goal to change the world through development of effective leadership.

Deeply ingrained traditional models of leadership have inhibited health care organizations from performing at the full capacity of those involved around the world. The past several years of the pandemic have demonstrated that this outdated thinking is no longer sustainable. Unlocking Eve partnered with Leadership Circle to conduct research and development of pioneering knowledge, tools, and services for a new profile of leadership effectiveness in driving systems change. Unlocking Eve in partnership with The Center for Global Health and Development (CGHD) recently marked the opening of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly with a meeting of leaders working to bolster women’s economic empowerment. On Wednesday, September 20, Unlocking Eve will present the findings of their partnership research with world leaders from public, private, and government organizations focused on health equity, entrepreneurship, and sustainable financing in women’s health.

“In our combined 25 years in health care, we’ve seen firsthand the impact that varying leadership styles have had in health outcomes on a global scale,” said Eva McLellan, co-founder of Unlocking Eve. “Our goal is to unlock and harness the integrated capacities of leaders, pioneering a new leadership blueprint for a balanced and healthier world. One that reframes our understanding of effective leadership, challenging current norms and shifting the status quo. Our goal is both ambitious and essential: to empower 100 million integrated leaders by 2030.”

Leadership Circle and Unlocking Eve’s research outlines the specific challenges to effective leadership in health care and beyond. Key findings include:

 • Health crises established challenges to effective leadership: In the wake of the pandemic, it has been shown that countries with women leaders were more successful on average at reducing rates of transmission and death from COVID-19. This includes addressing threats for community impact and providing greater post-pandemic vision.
 • The lasting effects of the Great Resignation: More than 1 million women left the U.S. workforce, citing the lack of advancement opportunities as the number one reason for leaving. This contributes to the anticipated global health care worker shortage of 15 million by 2030.
 • Women are highly underrepresented in global health care leadership: While women make up 70% of the global health care workforce, they only hold 25% of senior leadership roles with 5% in top health care positions. In addition, the probability of a man achieving a managerial position in health care is 3.85 times higher than that of a woman.
 • Gender balance at the top matters: Organizations with gender-balanced leadership workforces are more successful, with an expected increase of 22% in global human capital wealth and demonstrated increases in organizational-level financial performance and staff productivity and satisfaction, as well as reduced burnout.

An integrated approach to leadership requires a greater combination of task-oriented and relationship-oriented qualities. These qualities have historically been incorrectly described with a male versus female binary. Effective leadership strongly correlates with the utilization of both relating and achieving characteristics, including collaboration, mentoring, and strategic and purposeful thinking. These qualities are prevalent in women leaders, demonstrating the critical failure of underrepresentation in decision-making positions.

“Leadership Circle has spent two decades refining our Universal Model of Leadership and building the most robust database of leadership effectiveness,” said Bill Adams, CEO and co-founder of Leadership Circle. “The opportunity to leverage our wealth of data to provide evidenced-based support to Unlocking Eve’s work is in perfect alignment with our mission to grow unity through the conscious practice of leadership.”

Leadership Circle and Unlocking Eve’s research evaluated more than 1,300 health care leaders across almost 70 countries. Supporting feedback to build these leadership profiles included input from more than 18,000 evaluators. This bespoke data was combined with Unlocking Eve’s experience in leading health care organizations to help build guidance for the models of inclusive leadership that will be required to bring transformational progress to health care and beyond.

Leadership Circle and Unlocking Eve detailed the findings of their research on integrated leadership in health care organizations in a new white paper. To learn more. please visit Integrated Leadership: The Pathway to Transforming Healthcare and Healing the World.

Leadership Circle CEO recognized among leading executives in Utah for his inspiring and innovative leadership

William (Bill) Adams, CEO of the Year 2023, Utah Business

Bill Adams

DRAPER, UTAH – Premier leadership consulting firm Leadership Circle today announced that CEO and Co-Founder Bill Adams was named a CEO of the Year 2023 honoree by Utah Business magazine.

Utah Business provides in-depth journalism on tech and entrepreneurial businesses. Each year, the magazine honors executives in the state who have led their organizations with strength, courage, and endurance, and who have made it their mission to change the way business in Utah is done.

“I’m honored to be recognized among so many exceptional leaders and proud to represent forward-thinking business leadership in Utah,” said Adams. “Leadership Circle may be a global company with employees and clients around the world, but our home—and headquarters—is right here in the heart of the state.”

A serial entrepreneur, Adams has more than 30 years of experience as a trusted advisor, teacher, consultant, and coach. He works with CEOs and executive teams in Fortune 500 corporations, nonprofits, startups, and more, helping them to fulfill their leadership and organizational potential. With Leadership Circle co-founder Bob Anderson, Adams has co-authored Mastering Leadership and Scaling Leadership, offering unparalleled insight into how great leadership drives transformational business outcomes.

Five Questions With CEO of the Year Bill Adams

LC: What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

ADAMS: The nature of the business is rewarding, in itself. Daily, I have the opportunity, either directly or indirectly, to help people become better and more effective leaders, which essentially means to become better human beings. All of us have the opportunity to be better at who we are and what we do, to know better what it means to show up in a way that makes a difference in others’ lives every day—to be radically human. If we can help leaders become more effective as a result, we can help them and all the people they influence. Whether there are a hundred thousand in their organization or just a few, helping them become better people: husbands, wives, partners, parents, better human beings, it’s absolutely rewarding.

LC: Who inspires you most?

ADAMS: There are two answers to this question: One, I am inspired by my children and my grandchildren, literally, every day. I’m a proud grandfather of 14 grandkids, all under the age of 16. What I’ve learned from them every time I’m with them, the way I’m able to participate in their lives, the way they change me; frankly, I admire and am inspired by them all the time. Another beautiful thing is watching my children, the four of them, all grow up, become adults, become parents, do those things that are most important in their lives. I’m inspired by them all.

The second answer is that I’ve worked with remarkable leaders for the better part of 40 years. One is Steve Ewing, retired vice chairman of DTE Energy. He is one of those leaders who so deeply cares about his people, the customers they take care of, the community, that everything he does is to improve the lives of the people he serves. This is a guy who shows up, takes a stand on everything that is important, and makes a difference in all of the lives he touches—and who is still doing it, at 75-plus years, today.

LC: What does success look like to you?

ADAMS: Success looks like me being the best version of myself every day. My job is to bring the best me to the table in everything I do, whether it’s within my family, community, church, or business. When I do that consistently—and it’s not always easy; I screw up a lot—that’s one way I measure my own success.

When we work with leaders, I view success as being able to help them become more effective and modify the way they lead. The end result is better business, better organization, better taking care of their customers and making a difference in the world. Ultimately, success is helping these leaders become the kind of human being that they were meant to be.

In some cases, I have the privilege of working with leaders that have impact in the world, like in commercial agriculture (how we’re going to feed the world and eliminate hunger) or in a large pharmaceutical company (global health and the elimination of disease). Success for me is to bring my very best to those customers and clients and to be serious about our mission of raising the conscious practice of leadership in the world. What a privilege that is.

LC: What advice do you have for your younger self?

ADAMS: There’s a level of seriousness in rigor and precision to the work that you do in the world, and you need to achieve that every day in the best way possible. Take it seriously. And then I would tell myself: Don’t take yourself too seriously.

Learn how to forgive yourself and give yourself grace. Don’t be your own harshest critic because, you know what? At the end of the day, it doesn’t do any good. It just makes life difficult in a way that it doesn’t have to be.

Find humor every day. Love and laugh a lot. I used to be so fearful that I would do something that would embarrass me. That fear of embarrassment kept me from being as effective and as good and as adept as I want to be in the world. I was afraid to take risks. That’s taking yourself too seriously in all the ways you shouldn’t.

Sometimes, the learning doesn’t go quite as quickly as it needs to, and I feel like I’m learning the same lessons over and over again. But that’s part of it. You just have to keep at it.

LC: If you weren’t a CEO, what would you do?

ADAMS: I’d still be doing the work of the work, all the time. I’d still be working with leaders, working to make a difference. As long as I’m relevant, I’m going to do that.

I would spend a lot more time giving back. One of the areas that I love and want to do even more in is youth leadership. Working with young adults and helping them mature and develop more rapidly in the way that they interact and involve themselves in the world.

And then, quite honestly, I would be much more engaged and involved with my own family—for as long as they’d put up with me.

How COVID has Influenced Leadership https://leadershipcircle.com/en-au/how-has-covid-influenced-leadership/ Tue, 01 Mar 2022 22:49:46 +0000 https://leadershipcircle.com/how-has-covid-influenced-leadership/ The post How COVID has Influenced Leadership appeared first on Leadership Circle.

]]>

The COVID-19 Pandemic has affected pretty much every aspect of our lives, leadership included. Leaders recognize that agility, creatively leading, and flexibility are no longer “nice-to-haves” but are essential to employee morale, business operations, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Curious to gain a better understanding of how leadership has been affected over the last two years, we dived into our data. We analyzed Leadership Circle Profile (LCP) Reports from 2019, 2020, and 2021 to see how COVID has influenced leadership. What follows are the most relevant findings from that research.

Analysis of 13,536 leader profiles from:

 • 138 countries (32% from the United States)
 • 61 industries
 • 1,172 companies

Along with our research into leaders’ profiles, we conducted an in-depth survey of randomly selected leaders in the US and asked them the following:

 • In what ways has managing during COVID changed your leadership approach?
 • What has been the most significant learning about your leadership due to managing during COVID?
 • What leadership advice would you give others based on your experience managing during COVID?

Here is what we discovered:

Many of us have experienced the initial shock of going from an in-office setting to working from home and feeling siloed from co-workers. Keeping up with constant emails, instant messaging, and conference calls–not to mention our personal lives–made it hard to manage workloads. Leaders found themselves longing for more connection and organization during the new reality they were facing.

Lower levels of management were predominately challenged by the constant disruptions that increased the difficulties in motivating their teams, whereas the greatest challenge for senior managers revolved around the loss of connection with Direct Reports. All management levels felt challenged by the increased demands on their leadership capacity.

Another challenge leaders faced while managing COVID was that disruptive change has made it difficult to keep everyone motivated and focused on the long-term. We found that leaders were more likely to increase their complying tendencies due to lack of connection, causing them to either pull back and increase distance, or take complete control of the work.

Leaders were less likely to focus on leadership assessment during the peak of COVID in 2020, but there was a significant increase in leadership assessment during in 2021. This may be due to leaders recognizing that they need more information on their leadership after dealing with something as significant as COVID.

Our analysis of the yearly LCP data also shows an increase in Creative leadership in the midst of COVID and a decrease in Reactive leadership. These findings run counter to the narrative we’ve seen frequently of leaders wilting under the pressures of COVID. Of course, that’s happened in individual cases, but overall, we see that leaders have risen to the challenges COVID has presented. How encouraging!

As leaders have leaned into developing Creative leadership in this volatile new world, they’ve found that adapting, communicating, and adjusting are key to sustainable success and growth.

75% of leaders said adaptability and flexibility were essential to their success
69% of leaders stated that strong communication skills were a strength during these times
50% of leaders said composure allowed for the adjustment to be smooth

Effective leadership is a muscle to be trained and developed. When we asked what changes in leadership approach leaders were striving for over the past two years, it varied by management level.

What are leaders learning about themselves? Here are the top 3 lessons learned while managing during COVID:

28

of leaders say you must be open to adjustments and accommodations to maintain engagement/relationships

25

of leaders say it is important to patiently engage with others, listen to them, and show them kindness and respect

18

of leaders say everyone's circumstances are different, and some are more insecure than others. Understanding is key

Based on these learnings, here are the things leaders felt they have most improved on during the pandemic:

97% of leaders reported that their leadership had improved as a result of leading during COVID

-

97%
60% of leaders have an increased the desire to improve own leadership

-

60%
24% of leaders became kinder / gentler toward co-workers

-

24%
45% of leaders emphasized the need to build stronger relationships

-

45%
33% of leaders increased their patience and became more forgiving of mistakes

-

33%
28% of leaders relinquished control and let others share in leadership and decision making

-

28%

Direct COVID Impact
Based on feedback about management challenges and emerging strengths tied directly to COVID

The most frequently cited challenges leaders faced in managing COVID include loss of connection, disruptive change, eroded trust, and becoming overloaded. Here are a few of the comments from leaders we found particularly interesting:

Managing through change, like COVID 19 is the new norm, and unless he can step out of the day-to-day and reflect on the larger picture, it is unlikely we will be able to make progress.

I have been worried about her burning out for some time (even before covid), but the new added workload is beyond what anyone could have predicted.

To meet the demands of COVID-19, there is a tendency, at least temporarily, to try and maintain the status quo.

In many ways his direct reports and their teams feel abandoned and or isolated because of this year with COVID19.

The need for remote working due to COVID-19, can be challenging with regards to ensuring everyone is on the same page.

It is difficult because of the COVID-19 situation and travel restrictions, for him to learn about our team and gain perspective on both the market and some of the unique aspects of the business .

The most frequently cited strengths leaders developed and relied on to manage during COVID include transparent communication, composure, adaptability, honesty and vulnerability, encouragement of creativity and innovation, and willingness to take action. Here are a few of the comments from leaders that stood out to us:

His leadership through the COVID-19 and the ongoing crisis has been beyond commendable, setting an example for all of LT on how to plan and prepare, how to make difficult decisions, how to rally a team around his frameworks. Through all this he has stayed calm, cool and optimistic. It has been inspiring to watch.

She is helping us all navigate through COVID-19 by working to keep everyone informed and the lines of communication open. She maintains her sense of humor while at the same time being open to having difficult conversations and answer questions.

He has shown much growth in managing a complicated business as a result of working through 2020. COVID will continue to challenge us to find new and better ways to support our team and our customers and if all leaders can continue to think and work differently, we will be able to grow in intentional ways.

With Covid-19, flexibility and the ability to adapt is critical and is something that I am seeing first-hand from this leader.

The biggest learnings revolve around the need to remain flexible, adapt as necessary to circumstances, and actively engage with others, asking questions and empathizing with what others are going through.

Although COVID has presented many challenges, it has also provided an opportunity for leadership to be developed and for leaders to step up to the challenge … and many have!

Private investment firm RF Investment Partners invests in the fast-growing leadership platform that works with nearly 40% of the Fortune 50

Salt Lake City, UT, Feb 2, 2022 | Leadership Circle, the leadership development company that assesses, coaches, and develops some of the world’s most impactful business leaders and teams, today announced a $20M financing round with RF Investment Partners. The investment will be used to further develop the company’s LeadTechTM platform and SaaS capabilities, scale its signature 1:1 executive offerings, and support self-serve options for leadership assessment and development.

“We’re fully-aligned with Leadership Circle’s vision of using technology to bring transformational leadership development and high-performance team development to the world of business,” said Peter Rothschild, Co-founder and Managing Partner of RF Investment Partners. “The current reality of leadership leads the world’s CEOs into uncharted territories. We believe the Leadership Circle platform provides the direction leaders need to stay on course and chart new ones where needed, and we’re excited to be a part of their continued growth.”

Leadership Circle’s solutions are a combination of services and products designed to help leaders increase their leadership and team effectiveness and their organization’s ability to thrive in midst of volatile and ever-changing conditions. With more than 10,000 Certified Practitioners across the globe, Leadership Circle has supported more than 200,000 leaders spanning all industries—life science, commercial agriculture, medical, technology, financial, retail, government, manufacturing, NGOs, and more.

A major focus of development and investment in the coming years will be the LeadTechTM platform. It is the latest in online, asynchronous coaching for individuals and teams. As the future of work becomes increasingly virtual, Leadership Circle remains bullish on providing virtual leadership development options that adapt with the times, supported by AI and machine learning.

Leadership Circle’s data finds that 75% of leaders globally still operate from a reactive, non-scalable mindset—an issue further exacerbated by pandemic market volatility. Now, between an increasingly puzzling labor market fueled by the Great Resignation and what the World Economic Forum is coining a “reskilling emergency,” leaders are facing a new host of challenges and must prioritize leadership development to be successful in the years ahead.

“Effective leadership is not just a competitive advantage anymore. It’s a critical ingredient in operating a business in the ‘next normal,’” said Bill Adams, CEO and Cofounder at Leadership Circle. “Through working with executives at some of the top Fortune 500 companies in the world, we are already seeing improving business results when managers and executives make leadership a conscious practice. We’re excited to bring this solution to a wider group of rising leaders through the development of our services and technology offering.”

The organization amassed clients from some of the most prominent multinational corporations in the world, such as Salesforce, Syngenta, Microsoft and Ernst & Young.
